We have been working on a fossils unit in science! We started off this unit by categorizing fossils. We observed and categorized fossilized objects like shells and trilobites. Then, we talked about the four different types of fossils. We did project using salt dough in order to show haw mold fossils form. To do this, we pressed shells into salt dough and baked them to create our own mold fossil. The next day, we use play-dough to make a cast. This is the another type of fossils- cast fossils!
We also did a science lab to show how fossils are formed between rock layers. We pressed Swedish fish into layers of bread and observed the results. We took core samples and then tried to unearth our fossils. It was not as easy as it seemed! While our project only took one day, fossils take hundreds of millions of years!
Last but no least, this week was also STEAM night! Students were able to come in after school hours and do experiments and win prizes! We made paper airplanes! Students tried and put as many pennies as they could on a "cargo" paper airplane and still make it fly! Congratulations to Griffin, Ben, and Dane for our class for having planes that held a lot of weight!
