Thank you thank you to everyone who made Teacher Appreciation Week awesome! I felt so loved and appreciated with all of the flowers, goodies, notes and school supplies that you gave! Your students really make my job awesome every day, but thank you for spoiling me nonetheless :)
We have been working on a fossils unit in science! We started off this unit by categorizing fossils. We observed and categorized fossilized objects like shells and trilobites. Then, we talked about the four different types of fossils. We did project using salt dough in order to show haw mold fossils form. To do this, we pressed shells into salt dough and baked them to create our own mold fossil. The next day, we use play-dough to make a cast. This is the another type of fossils- cast fossils!
We also did a science lab to show how fossils are formed between rock layers. We pressed Swedish fish into layers of bread and observed the results. We took core samples and then tried to unearth our fossils. It was not as easy as it seemed! While our project only took one day, fossils take hundreds of millions of years! Last but no least, this week was also STEAM night! Students were able to come in after school hours and do experiments and win prizes! We made paper airplanes! Students tried and put as many pennies as they could on a "cargo" paper airplane and still make it fly! Congratulations to Griffin, Ben, and Dane for our class for having planes that held a lot of weight! It is here! On Tuesday, the mystery book our class wrote, The Case of the 24 Stories, arrived! We had fun seeing our own stories published! Great job to all of our authors!
We have been publishing a class book! We have each written a mystery and illustrated an accompanying page. I can't wait to see what the final product looks like! I hope you have a great Spring Break and I will see you all in a week!
We also had book clubs last week. This is a chance to get together and ask questions, share insights, and chat about books that a book! We are also still in the middle of the Pennies for Patients fundraiser! Tomorrow, students can wear a hat all day if they bring $1 to donate!
Wow, where did November go? I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends! We have been doing so much in class! Art LiteracyWe had our Art Literacy time. We focused on primary and secondary colors when we made our own colorful Rorschach ink blot tests! It was so great to see the final products. Everyone saw something different when we looked at them! Thanks to the fabulous Art Lit parents for putting it together :) ReadingWe also worked on retelling in class. In order to practice, we created and shared story paths. These story paths told all of the important events from a story! We then presented them to our classmates. We also did a scavenger hunt in class! We found questions hidden around the room about the moral of a story! MathIt's time for the West Union Ham Dinner! Come on Friday, Veteran's Day to fill up on delicious food! The dinner is from 4:30 to 7:00. We made the mural above to decorate for the day! We have also just started our Place Value unit in Math! We have been talking about how to show each number place (ones, tens, hundreds) with words, pictures, and in expanded form (example: 267 is 200 + 60 + 7). We played a couple games on Friday to practice these concepts! Thank you so much for everyone who has come in for conferences! A couple resources that may be helpful for you:
